Stevens Point sweeps basketball doubleheader against Marshfield

STEVENS POINT – Stevens Point Area Senior High swept its annual home girls-boys doubleheader against Marshfield on Tuesday night, with the girls winning 62-47 and the boys fighting to a 77-70 victory.

In the girls game, Stevens Point improved to 8-0 this season and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference with a strong first half that saw it take a 29-16 lead and move on the win from there.

Marshfield, which falls to 1-3 overall after losing its WVC opener, had 21 turnovers and shot just 36 percent (18 of 49) in the loss.

Katie Osinski scored 11 points and Jenna Jakobi added 10 for the Tigers.

Stevens Point put up 41 first-half points in the boys game to take a nine-point lead and held off the Tigers the rest of the way in the Wisconsin Valley Conference opener for both teams.

Seth Anderson made 11 of 15 shots from the field and scored a career-high 29 points for Marshfield. Reed Miller added 11 points and 10 rebounds, Tommy Olson hit three 3-pointers and had 12 points, and Brant Bohman also had 11 for the Tigers (2-4, 0-1 WVC).

Marshfield made 10 3-pointers in the loss, including four from Anderson.

Stevens Point, the three-time defending WIAA Division 1 state champions, improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Drew Blair led the Panthers with 40 points in the victory.

Both Marshfield teams will travel to Wisconsin Rapids later this week for more Wisconsin Valley Conference action. The girls play Thursday and the boys on Friday at Lincoln High School.
