Derek Austin scores 17 points to lead Stratford boys basketball team to 2nd win in a row

STRATFORD – Derek Austin hit three 3-pointers and scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Stratford boys basketball team to its second straight win to start the season as the Tigers downed Phillips 48-31 in a nonconference game Thursday night at Stratford High School.

Austin made 5 of 9 shots from the field and 4 of 6 free throws to lead the Tigers. Troy Mengel added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Stratford, which scored one-third of its points from the free-throw line (16 of 24).

Stratford hits the road for another nonconference game Friday at Amherst.
