Columbus Catholic girls basketball can’t overcome slow start, loses to Augusta

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s Elizabeth Manlick scored 24 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, but the Dons couldn’t overcome a slow start and dropped a 43-40 Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball game to Augusta on Thursday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

Augusta (8-5, 4-5 Cloverbelt East) jumped out to a 17-4 lead after the first quarter and led 27-16 by halftime.

The Dons closed the game by two more points heading into the fourth when they outscored Augusta 15-9 but couldn’t quite catch up. Columbus was hurt by making just 10 of 21 free throws.

Allie Nelson scored 19 points to lead Augusta.

Columbus drops to 4-8 and 3-6 in the Cloverbelt East. The Dons play at Gilman on Tuesday.
