Neillsville dominates second quarter, rolls past Spencer girls basketball

SPENCER – Neillsville used a 21-3 run in the second quarter to pull away and beat Spencer 63-34 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball game on Thursday night at Spencer High School.

The Warriors sweep the season series from Spencer and improve to 11-0 overall and 9-0 in the Cloverbelt East. Spencer falls to 8-4 and 6-3 in the conference.

Neillsville made 23 of 59 shots from the field, including 7 of 22 from 3-point range, and held the Rockets in check as they only had 28 shot attempts, making just 11. The Warriors also had 19 steals and held a 16-12 rebounding advantage.

Caitlynne Naughton had 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Jenny Lindner added 15 points for Neillsville.

Tara Matter topped Spencer with 11 points and four rebounds. Senior center Courtney Schulz returned from a foot injury after missing the last 10 games and scored two points in limited action.

Spencer is off until Jan. 27 when it hosts Loyal.
