AUGUSTA – Spencer outscored Augusta by eight points in the fourth quarter but its comeback attempt fell just short in dropping a 64-63 decision to the Beavers in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division boys basketball game Friday night at Augusta High School.

Augusta led 53-44 heading into the fourth quarter before the Rockets mounted a comeback, but came up one point shy of forcing overtime.

The Beavers (12-1, 10-1 Cloverbelt East) move into first place in the Cloverbelt East with the victory and a loss by Marshfield Columbus Catholic against Colby. Spencer falls to 7-6 and 5-6 in the conference after seeing its three-game winning streak snapped.

Sam Cattanach scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Steven Gilboy had 15 points and 10 boards for the Rockets. Joe Meyers added 13 points, making three of Spencer’s five 3-pointers in the game.

Joe Whalen led Augusta with 23 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Spencer hosts Owen-Withee next Thursday.
