Spencer girls basketball team uses big 2nd quarter to crush Augusta

AUGUSTA – Spencer erased an early deficit with a 19-0 surge in the second quarter and went on to beat Augusta 48-23 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball game Thursday night at Augusta High School.

Spencer trailed 10-7 after the first quarter before going on a dominating 19-0 run in the second quarter and outscored the Beavers 22-13 in the second half to preserve the victory.

Courtney Schulz scored 15 points and Tara Matter added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Rockets, who improve to 11-4 and 8-3 in the Cloverbelt East, maintaining a third-place tie with Colby in the standings.

Augusta drops to 9-7 and 5-7 in the conference. The Beavers had won six of their previous seven games heading into Thursday’s contest.

Spencer held a huge advantage at the free throw line, making 23 of 29, including 7 of 9 by Schulz. Augusta was just 2 of 6 on free throws.

Spencer returns to action Tuesday at home against Marshfield Columbus Catholic.
