Marshfield boys hockey team forces tie with first-place Wausau West

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield’s Zac Alboreo scored with 6 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and neither team could score in the extra period as the Tigers tied first-place Wausau West 4-4 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys hockey game Thursday night at the Marshfield Youth Ice and Recreation Center.

Both teams exchanged goals throughout the game. Marshfield built a 2-1 lead after goals by Schuyler Seyfert and Austin Littmann in the second period before West surged ahead with back-to-back scores from Tom Kilgore and Alex Halbrook.

Marshfield’s Bo Howard scored with 1:18 remaining in the second period to tie the game again at 3-3 before West again pulled ahead on a Kilgore goal 1:34 into the third period.

Alboreo scored off an assist from Littmann as time wound down to push the game into overtime.

West goalie Sam Weigert saved five shots and Marshfield goalie Mac Alboreo had eight saves in OT to preserve the tie. Alboreo had 52 saves in all for the Tigers.

Wausau West remains in first place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference at 9-0-2 (12-6-2 overall), while the Tigers move to 8-10-1 and 2-7-1 in the conference with two games remaining.

Marshfield hosts Wausau East on Tuesday and plays at Merrill next Thursday to wrap up the regular season. West needs a win at home on Feb. 9 against Wisconsin Rapids to take its fifth straight WVC championship.
