WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys soccer team suffered its second straight frustrating loss, falling to Wausau West 1-0 on Thursday at West High School.

West’s Erich Spangberg scored 3:52 into the game and that proved to be all of the offense as the Warriors held on for the win, improving to 1-5-1 and 1-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

Marshfield falls to 1-3 and 0-2 in the Valley.

Tigers coach Ron Todryk said Marshfield outshot West 10-3, but managed only four shots on goal and missed a great opportunity to tie the game in the closing minutes.

Marshfield got off two shots that were deflected by the packed-in West defense around the goal. One, Todryk said, appeared to hit an arm or hand of a West player, but it was not called a hand ball and no penalty was given.

“We played well between the 18s (yard lines), but when we got the ball inside they packed in their defense and we couldn’t get anything going,” Todryk said.

Marshfield hosts Wausau East on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Griese Park.
