FALL CREEK – The Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team trailed 13-0 at halftime before rallying for 21 unanswered points and beat the Crickets 21-13 in a Cloverbelt Conference game Friday night at Fall Creek High School.

The Rockets finish the regular season with a 6-2 record and a 5-2 mark in the Cloverbelt Conference.

For the second straight week, Spencer/Columbus knocked a team out of playoff contention. The Rockets beat Osseo-Fairchild on Oct. 5 to eliminate the Thunder, and on Friday with the loss, Fall Creek ends its Cloverbelt season with a 3-4 record (4-4 overall).

“Tonight our kids really showed what kind of heart they have,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “We played poorly in the first half. They stuck with it, though, and battled back to dominate the second half. I was real proud of the effort and character of our team.”

Josh Eastenson threw touchdown passes to DeShawn Giles and Mitchell Benner in the first half to give Fall Creek a 13-0 lead at the break.

Spencer/Columbus got its offense rolling in the second half. Charlie Mayeux scored on a 2-yard touchdown run and Joe Meyers added a 14-yard score, with Call Innman kicking both important extra points, to give Spencer/Columbus a 14-13 lead.

Mayeux added a 5-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to finish off the win.

Eathen Aden had 66 yards to lead a balanced rushing attack for the Rockets, who outgained Fall Creek 214-8 on the ground.

Calvin Lenz added 60 yards passing, completing 3 of 4.

Tyler Stelson led Spencer/Columbus with 10 tackles, Justin Mueller had three tackles for loss, and Mitchell Susa had an interception for the Rockets’ defense.

Spencer/Columbus will compete in the WIAA playoffs next week. It’s first-round opponent will be announced on Saturday when the WIAA releases its brackets. MarshfieldAreaSports.com will have a story when the brackets are made available.
