FOND DU LAC – The University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County men’s basketball team used a stifling defense to defeat UW-Fond du Lac 56-31 in its 2012-13 season opener on Friday night in a semifinal of the UW-Fond du Lac Tip-Off Tournament.
Brandon Herr scored 13 points and Leo Braun added 11 points for the Marauders.
Cain Trunkel had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Jesse Bejcek just missed one with nine points and nine rebounds for UW-Marshfield.
The Marauders play Silver Lake College, an 83-69 winner over Fox Valley Technical College on Friday, in the tournament championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The UW-Marshfield/Wood County women’s team also opened its season with a 53-50 win over UW-Fond du Lac in the women’s tournament semifinals.
Kaitlynn Mefferd had 19 points, with Heather Adrian and Addie Vold both scoring 10 points for the Marauders. Vold added five assists.
“Well a win is a win no matter how good or bad it is,” Marauders coach Rhonda Keding. “This is our first game so we are seeing what we need to do. I’m proud how well the girls played. You can practice and practice, but it comes to that first game where you really find out what you really need to work on.”
