PITTSVILLE – Auburndale used a stifling defense in the second half and went on to beat Pittsville 42-20 in a Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball game Tuesday night at Pittsville High School.

Auburndale led 17-13 at halftime, then blew the game open with a dominating 25-7 run in the second half.

Shannon Yahnke scored 12 points and Nicole Nikolay had nine points and six steals for Auburndale, which remains unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Marawood South.

Pittsville (0-6, 0-3 Marawood South) had just three players score in the game. Marissa Ortner led the Panthers with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

“It was a slow start to the game for us,” Auburndale coach Liz Nagel said. “We have to credit Pittsville with good defense holding us around 28 percent shooting. In the second half the ladies decided to come out and play with higher intensity and we were able to get the ball to drop into the hoop.”

Auburndale hosts Marathon at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
