ALTOONA – Spencer rallied from four points down in the first overtime and eventually pulled out a 52-47 double overtime win over Altoona in a Cloverbelt Conference East-West fourth-place crossover game Friday at Altoona High School.

Altoona’s Ariel Gillespie hit a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime with the score tied at 37-37.

Down by four in the overtime, Spencer rallied and Courtney Schulz’s basket with 40 seconds left tied the game and it went into a second overtime where the Rockets prevailed, finishing their regular season with a 15-7 record.

Schulz led Spencer with 15 points, Deanna Szybowicz added 11 and Kyleigh Hebert had 10.

“The girls played very well and executed our defensive scheme,” Spencer coach Dan Brodziski said. “I’m very proud of how the girls held their composure after Altoona hit a last-second 3 in regulation to send it into overtime.

“Kyleigh Hebert played a nice all-around game, along with Courtney, Aubrie and Deanna hitting big shots down the stretch.”

Spencer hosts Chetek in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal Tuesday.
