STEVENS POINT – The battle for second place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Golf Tournament continued Tuesday at Stevens Point Country Club.
Merrill edged Marshfield by two strokes to tie the Tigers for second place in the overall standings at the fifth leg of the tournament.
Stevens Point won its fifth straight leg of the tournament with a 301 as its top four golfers finished second through fifth.
Merrill’s Mike Pagel finished third to lead the Bluejays with a 74.
Josh Berres topped Marshfield with a 78 to finish seventh, and Evan Schneider was ninth with an 83. Berres is in sixth place in the overall individual standings.
Matt Sandquist of Wausau West was meet medalist with a 71 and is tied with Trevor Thomas of Stevens Point for first place overall heading into the sixth and final leg of the tournament on Friday at Merrill Country Club.
Kyle Hoffman tied for 10th with an 84, Ian Pillai tie for 14th with an 85 and Craig Serchen tied for 26th with a 92 to round out Marshfield’s scoring.
