MARSHFIELD – Austin Gilbert netted two goals and an assist and Marshfield allowed just two shots on goal in a 5-0 shutout of Merrill in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer game Tuesday at Griese Park.

The victory is the third straight for the Tigers and their record improves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Merrill falls to 0-3 and 0-2 in the conference.

Alex Babinski and Matt McCann scored in the first half to put the Tigers up 2-0.

McCann added an unassisted goal 6:40 into the second half and Gilbert scored on a penalty kick and a free kick later in the half to provide the five-goal advantage.

Matt Brown only had to save two shots in goal as Marshfield dominated the ball.

“The team is starting to play better together every game,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “We see improvement in the trust, in how they pass the ball to everybody because they have confidence in each other. You don’t know who is going to score for us. We have so many passing combinations out there.”

Marshfield plays at D.C. Everest on Thursday night.
