Spencer volleyball sweeps Loyal/Granton, clinches share of Cloverbelt East title

LOYAL – Marisa Johnson, Tynae Phillips and Macie Weber each had nine kills to lead the first-place Spencer volleyball team to 3-0 sweep of Loyal/Granton on Thursday at Loyal High School.

The Rockets won 25-23, 25-6, 25-15, to improve to 7-0 and clinch a share of the Cloverbelt Conference East Division title, setting up a big matchup Tuesday.

Spencer hosts Owen-Withee (5-1 Cloverbelt East) in its final conference match of the season on Tuesday at Spencer High School. A win, and the Rockets would win the outright Cloverbelt Conference title for the second straight year. Owen-Withee lost its first Cloverbelt East match of the season Thursday, falling 3-2 to Neillsville.

Johnson added seven aces and 22 digs, Brooke Kettleborough had 30 assists and Lindsey Vaughan led the Spencer defense again with 32 digs.

“We started really slow in game one, but came back and really clicked the rest of the night,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. W”e had a balanced attack all night and served aggressive as a team. The girls are excited to play for their No. 1 goal of the year…defending the conference title.”

Spencer will compete at the Stratford Invitational on Saturday.
