Marshfield baseball sweeps Wausau East, improves to 5-0

MAUSTON – The Marshfield baseball team kicked off its Wisconsin Valley Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Wausau East on Saturday at the new Woodside Sports Complex.

A game scheduled for April 15 at Wausau East and another set for Marshfield on May 8 were moved to Saturday at Mauston.

Marshfield scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the first game 3-2, then rolled past the Lumberjacks 15-7 in Game 2.

Colton Zahradka threw seven innings, allowing two runs and just one hit before being pulled in the top of the eighth for Dylan Budtke, who earned the win with an inning of relief for Marshfield.

Sam Klein went 2-for-2 with a run scored for the Tigers.

In the second game, Jack Donahue threw a complete game, giving up seven hits and seven runs, and also went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Daulton Varsho was 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run and four runs scored; Caleb Alexander was 3-for-4 with four runs and two stolen bases; and Klein went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a triple for Marshfield (5-0, 2-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference).

Wausau East is 2-2 and 0-2 in the Valley.

Marshfield is scheduled to play at Wausau West next Friday.
