Stratford boys, Columbus girls second at Auburndale Track Invite

AUBURNDALE – Steve Wenzel won the 1,600 meters (4:47.39) and 3,200 meters (10:45.19), and the Stratford boys posted three other first-place finishes to take second place at the Auburndale Track and Field Invitational on Thursday at Auburndale High School.

The Tigers also won the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relays, and Ben Robers took first in the pole vault (12 feet, 6 inches).

Stratford also got second-place finishes from Matt Zuelke in the 1,600 (4:51.01) and Austin Cole in the shot put (43-11.5) as the Tigers accumulated 112 ½ points.

Wausau Newman Catholic won both the boys and girls team titles at the nine-team meet.

The Marshfield Columbus Catholic girls were second behind Newman despite not winning and individual title.

The Dons took second in all four relays (400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200), losing each time to Newman.

Sarah Brandt also had an individual second for Columbus in the 3,200 (12:46.46).

Stratford’s girls were third, Auburndale fourth and Spencer fifth in the team standings.

Stratford only had one top-two finish – Heather Schneider took second in the discus (97-4).

Danica Harrison duplicated her double victories from Tuesday’s Wood County Meet, by winning the 1,600 (5:56.79) and 3,200 (12:33.69) on Thursday at her home meet.

Kelly Tomfohrde also posted a meet title for the Apaches, winning the pole vault (8-6). Samantha Karl was second in the 800 (2:34.37).

Spencer’s Marcie Hebert also had a double victory, taking first in the discus (106-8) and shot put (31-10).

Jake Dorshorst had another solid performance in the hurdles for the Auburndale boys. He won the 110 hurdles in 17.10 seconds and took second in the 300 hurdles in 44.48.

David Hass was second in the 3,200 (11:00.10) and CJ Castellano was runner-up in the high jump (5-8) for the Apaches.

The Columbus boys posted a win in the 800 relay and was a close second in the 400 relay, losing by just 5/100 of a second to Newman.

Tyler Kolstad (6-0 in the high jump) and Bryan Brodziski (39-8 ¾ in the triple jump) had victories for the Spencer boys.

Upcoming schedules include Auburndale at the Chequamegon Invite at Park Falls on Monday and Columbus Catholic at the Stratford Invitational next Thursday. Stratford will host a quadrangular, which includes Spencer, on Monday, and hosts the Stratford Invitational next Thursday.
