MARSHFIELD – Marshfield sophomore Derek Michalski shot an even-par 72 to win medalist honors and lift the Tigers to a second-place finish at the WIAA Division 1 boys golf regional on Wednesday at RiverEdge Golf Course.

Marshfield shot a team score of 339, trailing only first-place Stevens Point by 12 shots, to advance to next Tuesday’s sectional at Stevens Point Country Club.

Antigo took third with a 345 and Wausau East (348) defeated Wausau West in a playoff for the fourth and final team slot at the sectional.

Michalski, who won a Wisconsin Valley Conference meet at his home course at RiverEdge last week, was five shots better than Stevens Point’s Taylor Thomas, who was second with a 77.

To go along with 11 pars, Michalski had birdies on the par 5 2nd hole, and both par 3s on the front nine, Nos. 5 and 7, to offset a double bogey on No. 3 and a bogey on No. 8. He had a birdie on the par 5 14th hole and bogeyed the 15th.

Brandon Nikolai tied for eighth with an 84, Zach Shortess had a 91 and Jordan Schlinsog shot a 92 to round out the scoring for Marshfield. Zach Hanson added a 95.

The top two teams and top three individuals not on those qualifying teams will advance to the 2015 WIAA State Boys Golf Championships at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona on June 8-9.
