AUBURNDALE – Nick Steele returned the opening kickoff of the second half 85 yards for a touchdown to put Auburndale up by 13, but the Apaches couldn’t hold on and lost 20-19 to Fall Creek in a nonconference football game Friday night at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale is now 2-3, while Fall Creek improves to 3-2.
Kurt Jankowski scored on a 9-yard touchdown in the first quarter for the Apaches, who took the 7-0 lead into halftime.
Steele’s big return put Auburndale on top 13-0 before Fall Creek got its offense going.
Cody Folkers threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Sawyer Rubeck to get the Crickets on the board.
Jankowski, who rushed for a game-high 124 yards, added a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Apaches up 19-7.
Folkers threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, the final one going 31 yards to Christian LeMay with 45 seconds left to provide the winning points for Fall Creek.
Auburndale has another nonconference game at Phillips on Sept. 25.
