Four-run fifth lifts Columbus softball past Owen-Withee

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a tie game and eventually beat Owen-Withee 9-7 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game Monday at the Central Wisconsin Fairgrounds.

Victoria Dieringer was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Olivia Larson was 2-for-2 and scored three times for the Dons, who are 3-1 in their last four games and improve to 5-7 overall and 4-5 in the Cloverbelt East. O-W falls to 2-10, 2-8 in conference play.

Columbus led 4-1 after three innings before the Blackhawks tied it in the fourth. Each team scored a run in its next at-bat before the Dons scored four times in the fifth off Britt Zoellick (11 strikeouts, seven walks).

Owen-Withee scored twice in the sixth but Katelyn Welsh (one strikeout, no walks) held the Blackhawks scoreless in the seventh to preserve the win.

Columbus hosts first-place Neillsville at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Fairgrounds.
