WESTON – Marshfield freshman Nolan Hertel qualified for the state tournament with a second-place finish at the WIAA Division 1 wrestling sectional Saturday at D.C. Everest High School.

Hertel (31-12) needed to come back through the consolation bracket to earn his first state berth.

Hertel won the third-place match at 138 pounds over Jon Fox of Rhinelander 3-1 and then defeated Seth Leavens of New Richmond 8-6 in the second-place wrestleback to qualify for state.

The 2016 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament will be held at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 25-27.

Hertel lost 5-1 to Fox in last week’s regional but came back with a big win after a takedown in the final minute of the match.

The match with Leavens was tied 6-6 with 10 seconds left when Hertel scored a takedown to win the match and advance to state.

“It was a great wrestling match,” Marshfield coach Jackson Hein said. “Nolan wrestled his heart out and I am so happy he is able to represent Marshfield down in Madison this next weekend. He continues to get better every single match, which comes from his positive attitude and unmatched work ethic.”

Marshfield also had third-place finishes from Anthony Kanable at 132 and Tanner Kanable at 106.

Anthony Kanable wrapped up his junior season with a 30-12 record after beat Branden McClure of Superior with a pin in 1:52.

Tanner Kanable (22-15), a freshman, won by major decision over Ben Diny of Wausau East 13-4. Neither Kanable earned a chance at a second-place wrestleback.

Sam Mitchell (152) place fourth for the Tigers. Bentley Schwanbeck-Ostermann (145), Kyle Krizan (170), Payton Young (160), and Sam Bauman (195) also competed at the sectional but did not finish in the top four.

“I am extremely proud of every single one of our wrestlers,” Hein said. “We truly put it all on the line and competed hard at every weight class. We definitely had some heartbreaking losses but it was a learning experience for the following years. Anthony Kanable and Tanner Kanable lost some tough matches in the semifinals, but demonstrated resiliency coming back and winning that last match.”
