MADISON – Marshfield freshman Nolan Hertel lost his opening match at the 2016 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Thursday afternoon, dropping a 9-1 major decision to Kaukauna sophomore Zach Lee at the Kohl Center in a Division 1 138-pound preliminary match.

Lee led 6-1 after the first period on the strength of two takedowns and a two-point nearfall in the closing seconds.

Hertel could not muster another point, starting the second period with control and third period on the bottom. A nearfall by Lee (43-6) with 50 seconds to go in the match provided the final score.

Hertel (31-13) will take part in a consolation match against Drew Fjoser (19-3) of Sun Prairie at approximately 10:30 a.m. Friday. Lee beat Fjoser 11-6 in overtime to move into the semifinals and secure a spot in the consolation bracket for Hertel, giving him a chance to finish as high as third place should he win four more matches.
