MADISON – Marshfield’s Nolan Hertel came up short in his bid for a medal by losing a consolation match at the 2016 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center on Friday morning.

Hertel, who lost his preliminary match on Thursday in the Division 1 138-pound field, dropped an 8-3 decision to Drew Fjoser (21-3) of Sun Prairie in a consolation bracket match Friday.

Hertel trailed 3-2 early in the third period before Fjoser got a takedown and three-point nearfall to make it 8-2. Hertel earned an escape but could not gain control of Fjoser in the closing minute.

Hertel finishes his freshman season with a 31-14 record. Fjoser went on to win his next consolation bracket match and is guaranteed a spot in the top six and a state tournament medal.

Zach Lee of Kaukauna, who defeated Hertel in a preliminary match on Thursday afternoon, moved into Friday night’s semifinals at 138 pounds with an 11-6 victory in the quarterfinals.
