MADISON – The Stratford wrestling team suffered a heartbreaking, unexpected loss on Saturday as it fell to Fennimore 27-26 in the Division 3 championship match at the 2016 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament at the UW Fieldhouse.

The dual with Fennimore went down to the final two matches. Stratford led 26-19 and just needed to keep each match close in order to escape with its first-ever state team wrestling title.

Fennimore’s Riley Blair defeated Derek Marten 6-2 at 126 pounds to inch the Golden Eagles to within four.

Fennimore’s Alston Nutter then earned a 14-2 major decision over Anthony Gliniecki at 132 pounds to even the score at 26-26, but what it did was win the dual as the Golden Eagles won the tiebreaker used at the state tournament of total matches won, which they did 8-6.

David Marquardt (152) and Tyson Kauffman (285) won decisions, Dylan Schoenherr (170) earned a major decision, Kamren Bornbach (182) and A.J. Schoenfuss (120) won by technical fall, and Kade Ehrike (160) won by pin for the Tigers.

Stratford reached the finals with a dominating 43-26 win over defending Division 3 state champion Spring Valley/Elmwood in the semifinals Saturday morning.

Gliniecki (132), Marquardt (160), Bornbach (182), Kauffman (285), Macey Kilty (106) and Jake Drexler (113) each won by pin for Stratford. Jeremy Schoenherr earned a major decision at 138 and Aiden Hoffman earned a decision at 195 for the Tigers.

“The team seemed ready for this tournament, just like they have all year,” Stratford coach Joe Schwabe said. “We started out wrestling a near flawless match against Spring Valley and did exactly what needed to be done. However, for some reason, we did not seem as sharp or nearly aggressive against Fennimore.

“We lost a few scoring opportunities and not much seemed to go our way. Fennimore came out swinging and wrestled super tough. They earned their state title. I think we all learned a little this weekend-the hard way unfortunately.”
