College roundup: Updates on three local athletes playing at the collegiate level

A number of former local high school athletes have moved on to the next level and are playing sports collegiately across the country.

This is the third of a three-part series by MarshfieldAreaSports.com highlighting area athletes’ exploits at the collegiate level.

Spencer’s Hebert earns all-WIAC honors
Kyleigh Hebert, a 2012 Spencer High School graduate, recently earned a high honor following her senior season for the University of Wisconsin-Stout women’s basketball team.

Hebert averaged 11.2 points per game, which ranked eighth in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was named to the first team of the all-WIAC squad.

Hebert averaged a conference-best 4 assists per game and was second in the WIAC with 2.4 steals per game for the Blue Devils, who finished 10-16 overall and 4-10 in the conference.

Kummer wraps up freshman season at Cardinal Strich
Ellie Kummer, a 2015 Marshfield High School graduate, recently finished her freshman season on the Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee) women’s basketball team.

Kummer played in 15 of the Wolf Pack’s 33 games, averaging 5.2 minutes and 1.3 points per game in limited action.

Kummer, who graduated from Marshfield as the 11th leading scorer in program history, was part of a Cardinal Stritch team that finished 25-8 overall, 15-3 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, and reached the NAIA Division II National Tournament.

Kummer played three minutes and didn’t score in the Wolf Pack’s 82-52 win over Lawrence Tech (Mich.) in the first round of the tournament and did not play in their 84-65 loss to No. 1-ranked Morningside (Iowa) in the second round.

Varsho starting for UW-Milwaukee baseball
Daulton Varsho, a 2014 graduate of Marshfield High School, is off to a great start for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team.

The sophomore catcher is hitting a team-high .386 (44-for-114) andalso leads the team with four home runs, 20 RBIs, three triples, and 24 runs scored as the Panthers are to an 12-14 start and a 5-2 mark in the Horizon League.

Varsho went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the Panthers’ 6-5 win over Valparaiso on April 3, and was a combined 4-for-7 with an RBI in a Horizon League two-game series split at home with Wright State last weekend.

The Panthers are scheduled to play a nonconference game at Chicago State on Wednesday and a three-game conference season at Illinois-Chicago on Friday through Sunday.
