Marshfield wrestling dominates Wausau West, finishes off unbeaten WVC season

WAUSAU – The Marshfield wrestling team wrapped up its second-straight Wisconsin Valley Conference regular-season dual meet title with a dominating 60-7 win over Wausau West on Thursday night at West High School.

The Tigers finish the Valley season with a perfect 6-0 record and can win its second overall conference title in a row at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament on Feb. 3 at Wausau East.

Marshfield won 12 of the 14 matches on Thursday, which included six pins, a forfeit and a technical fall.

Shane Westerhausen (113 pounds), Caden Dennee (126), Spencer Wirthlin (138), Nolan Hertel (152), Payton Young (160), and Sam Mitchell (220) all won by pin for the Tigers.

Caden Pearce won by technical fall at 145, Tanner Kanable had a major decision at 132, and Gabe Pugh (120), Ben Gust (170), and Conner Berry (285) won by decision for Marshfield.

“I can go through our entire line up and talk about how proud I am of each wrestler who competed tonight, and how great they wrestled from the starting weight class (220) to the last (195),” Marshfield coach Jackson Hein said. “I have been telling our team all season that hard work, dedication on and off the mat, and believing in our team will help them reach their goals. It was a great way to end the regular season dual and we look forward to moving on to the conference tournament.”
