Marathon tops Stratford girls basketball in overtime

MARATHON – Marathon took a step closer to clinching its fourth-straight Marawood Conference South Division title with a 61-56 overtime victory over Stratford in a girls basketball game Tuesday at Marathon High School.

Marathon raced out to a 36-27 lead before the Tigers rallied to tie the game at 52-52 to force overtime.

The Raiders outscored Stratford 9-4 in the extra four-minute period to pull out the victory and push its lead over the Tigers in the Marawood South to three games.

Marathon is now 16-2 overall and 12-1 in conference play, while Stratford drops to 11-8 and 10-4 in the Marawood South. Wausau Newman Catholic stands at 10-3 in conference play to remain in the title chase after it defeated Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 65-57 on Tuesday. Newman hosts Marathon on Feb. 15.

Katelyn Schmidt scored 22 points, 17 in the first half, to lead the Raiders.

Kaylee Hollatz hit four 3-pointers, including three in the Tigers’ second-half comeback, and finished with a team-high 18 points.

Stratford hosts Chequamegon on Friday in a Marawood Conference crossover game.
