FOND DU LAC – The Marshfield boys soccer team finished action at the Fond du Lac Tournament on Saturday losing its opener to Sun Prairie 1-0 in a shootout and rebounding to beat Mayville 5-0.

The Tigers (4-4-2) finished the two-day tournament with a 1-2 record.

In the opener against Sun Prairie, Marshfield goalkeeper Erik Holm had 13 saves, stopping a number of point-blank shots by the Cardinals to force overtime.

Marshfield had only four shots on goal and couldn’t get a shot past Jeff Arb in the shootout. Driton Zytenjc won it for the Cardinals.

In the final game, Marshfield’s Trenton Tordryk scored his first goal of the season with 2:30 left in the first half to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Marshfield poured it on in the second half, taking advantage of a stiff wind. Alex Kelnhofer scored on an assist by Colin Telin, Eli Oba posted a pair of breakaway goals just 3 ½ minutes apart, and Ethan Bell capped the scoring on an assist by Austin Gilbert.

“The kids had the resiliency to bounce back,” Marshfield coach Ron Tordyk said. “They don’t get down on themselves after they lose and play even harder the next time.”

Marshfield plays a nonconference game at Rhinelander on Tuesday and returns to Wisconsin Valley Conference action Thursday at Stevens Point.
