WAUSAU – Marshfield staked claim to a third-straight conference title after winnings three flights and having three runner-up finishes at the 2019 Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Tennis Meet on Saturday at Wausau East High School.

The Tigers racked up 35 points to finish with 83 overall to outdistance Wausau East, which finished with 74 points after tying for third at the conference meet.

Results from the conference meet were not released until Tuesday because of a make-up dual match on Monday between Wausau East and Wausau West had to be completed to make the final results official. East beat West 6-1, but based on the conference tournament results, it did not factor in to Marshfield winning the overall WVC championship.

Ryan Paulman won the No. 3 singles title for the Tigers, beating Anders Aspenes of Wausau East, 6-4, 6-3, in the finals.

The Tigers also earned a conference title at No. 4 singles as Eli Swansen beat Henry Stifler of Wausau East in the finals, 6-4, 7-5.

Marshfield’s lone doubles title came from the No. 1 team of Jared Cordova and Will Fay, who beat Jaime Ayala and Luke Koziek of Stevens Point, 7-5, 6-3, in the finals.

Marshfield’s two other doubles teams finished second. The No. 2 team of Lucas Paulman and Sam Roherty won its first two matches before losing to Colton Thielman and Luke Hinchcliffe of Stevens Point in the finals, 6-4, 6-3.

The Tigers’ No. 3 team of Kennan Chojnacki and Justin Rachu went 1-1 in pool play and lost in the finals to Nathan Strasman and Noah Hlavac of Stevens Point, 6-3, 6-0.

Calvin Lawler finished second at No. 2 singles for Marshfield, losing in the finals to D.C. Everest’s Lucas Allen, 6-0, 6-4, and Sam Haessly finished 0-3 and finished sixth at No. 1 singles for the Tigers.
