MARSHFIELD – Stevens Point used a 12-0 run early in the second half to pull away from Marshfield and went on to defeat the Tigers 60-43 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys basketball game Saturday night at Marshfield High School.

Stevens Point won its fourth game in a row to improve to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Marshfield, losers of five in a row, are now 2-10 overall and 2-7 in conference play.

The Panthers scored 11-straight points early in the game to take a quick 16-4 lead. Marshfield, which had eight turnovers and only one shot attempt from the field in the first nine minutes of the game, was able to claw back with a solid final nine minutes of the half.

Carson Kvernen made Marshfield’s first field goal with 8:52 to go, Jack Nordbeck added three baskets, Kvernen made another hoop and a 3-pointer, and Chase Hinson scored with 6 seconds left before halftime to help the Tigers close to within 26-20 at halftime.

After each team scored four points in the opening 2:12 of the second half, the Tigers went cold again and Stevens Point took control.

Four-straight free throws from James Jacobs and 3-pointers by Bryce Pelky and Damian Cjeka keyed the 12-0 run that gave the Panthers a 42-24 lead with 9:47 remaining. Marshfield would get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Kvernen led Marshfield with 11 points and Jacobs finished with a game-high 22 points for SPASH.

Stevens Point will play at Wisconsin Rapids on Monday and host Wausau East on Tuesday. Marshfield returns to action Tuesday with a home game against Wausau West.
