Athens tops Auburndale boys basketball in regular-season finale

AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale boys basketball team dropped its regular-season finale to Athens 58-49 in a Marawood Conference crossover game Friday night at Auburndale High School.

Hunter Wright scored 28 points on 11 of 14 shooting, which included making 6 of 8 3-pointers, to lead Auburndale. The rest of the Eagles combined to shoot just 20 percent (7-for-35) in the loss.

Auburndale finishes the regular season with a 15-5 record and a 12-4 mark in the Marawood South.

Athens, champions of the Marawood North, is 18-4 overall and 11-3 in conference play.

Both teams will open postseason play Feb. 19 with regional semifinals at home. Athens will play the winner of Marathon and Thorp, and Auburndale will host the winner of Stevens Point Pacelli in Tri-County.
