Auburndale softball remains unbeaten with thrilling extra-inning win over Newman Catholic

WAUSAU – The Auburndale softball team remained unbeaten with a wild, come-from-behind 16-15 eight-inning win over Wausau Newman Catholic in a Marawood Conference South Division matchup Thursday at Sunnyvale Park.

Newman Catholic scored three times, five innings in a row from the second through the sixth, to take a 15-13 lead, overcoming a seven-run fifth by the Eagles.

Auburndale was able to plate a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings, then scored a run in the top of the eighth to grab the lead.

Auburndale pitcher Ashley Grimm got the final three outs in the bottom of the eighth to finish off the win.

Georgi Schmutzer had three hits and three RBIs, and Kaitlyn Kundinger had three hits and scored three times for Auburndale (4-0, 2-0 Marawood South), which finished with 17 hits.

Ashley Grimm, Faith Haferman, Regynn Lau and Kylie Frischman each added two hits, with Frischman driving in four for the Eagles.

Auburndale plays at Prentice on Friday.
