MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team swept all five of its matches to win the championship at its home Marshfield Invitational on Saturday.

Marshfield defeated Ripon 25-23, 25-21; Ladysmith 25-13, 25-16; Ashwaubenon 25-7, 25-15; Antigo 25-12, 25-9; and Abbotsford 25-7, 25-22.

Ladysmith finished 4-1, Ripon 3-2, Abbotsford 2-3, Antigo 1-4 and Ashwaubenon 0-5.

Following a loss to D.C. Everest in its Wisconsin Valley Conference opener Thursday, Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska was pleased with how the Tigers responded.

“We are so proud of how the girls bounced back today and implemented the things we worked on in practice last night,” Sadowska said. “It’s been a long time since we won this tournament, and I don’t know that we have ever done it winning every match 2-0.”

Abby Ongna had 43 kills and 27 digs, Casey Frankland added 32, and Caitlyn Pernsteiner had 31 kills and six service aces for the Tigers. Reinya Balderson had 102 assists and seven aces, and Elise Uphoff had a team-high 48 digs to lead the Marshfield defense.

Marshfield hosts Wausau West for a WVC match on Thursday at 7 p.m. and it will be live at zaleskisports.com.
