Marshfield cross country sweeps team, individual titles at home invitational

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield won both the girls and boys team titles, and two Tigers’ seniors won the individual races at the Marshfield Tiger Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday at Wildwood Park.

Eliana Kanitz won the girls race by nearly 20 seconds for Marshfield, finishing in 21:05.8, to lift the Tigers to the team title.

Marshfield had four runners finish in the top seven and finished with 36 points. Mosinee was second with 50 and Wisconsin Rapids third with 55. Spencer and Marshfield Columbus Catholic had incomplete squads.

Kairi Kim was fifth in 21:58.6, Calleigh Kanitz took sixth in 22:09.3, and Meghan Jaeger was seventh in 22:21.9 for Marshfield.

Emily Wehrman was 47th for Spencer (26:26.2) and Charlotte Schiferl took 61st (29:29.6) for Columbus Catholic.

Henry Hoerneman earned the win in the boys race for Marshfield, cruising to a time of 17:10.1 and defeating the nearest competition by 37 seconds.

The race for second was tight as Columbus Catholic brothers Andrew and Isaac Scheer battled down the stretch, with the elder Andrew (17:47.0) finishing less than one second ahead of Isaac (17:47.6) as they finished second and third. Wisconsin Rapids’ Colin Wellnitz was fourth (17:53.5) and Marshfield’s Graham Lonsdale took fifth in 18:09.1.

Marshfield easily won the boys team title with 34 points as Thomas Cashmer (eighth, 18:25.1), James Ketterer (ninth, 189:29.2) and Owen Hoermeman (11th, 18:36.1) contributed with top-11 finishes.

Marathon was a distant second with 113 points, Wisconsin Rapids third with 123, and Columbus Catholic eighth with 167. Spencer had just three runners compete.

Kaizer Eikleberry had Spencer’s top finish, taking 61st in 23:18.1.

Marshfield will compete at the Stevens Point Invitational at Standing Rock Park on Saturday. Columbus Catholic and Spencer will be at the Colby Invite on Saturday.
