EDGAR – Edgar running back Karter Butt carried the ball 27 times for 117 yards, but it was his two passes that proved pivotal.

Butt threw a halfback pass to convert a fourth down in the second quarter as the Wildcats finished the drive off with a touchdown, then threw another pass for a touchdown on a fourth down play in the fourth quarter as Edgar blanked Stratford 14-0 in a nonconference football game Friday night at Edgar High School.

Butt finished off the 65-yard drive in the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run as he touched the ball on all eight plays of the possession with seven runs and a 12-yard pass to Brett Baumgartner. The Wildcats converted an improbable two-point conversion as quarterback Teegan Streit threw a hook shot while being tackled to the back of the end zone that Leyton Schuett snagged to put Edgar up 8-0.

Stratford was held to just 58 yards and two first downs in the first half. The Tigers drove inside the 20 on their first possession of the game, but were thwarted on downs at the 16 and never threatened again in the half.

The second half didn’t go much better for the Tigers, who fall to 0-1-1 this season.

Stratford drove to the Edgar 25 on its first possession before stalling again and failing on a fourth-and-1. The Tigers didn’t get another first down the rest of the game.

Edgar finished off the scoring with another all-Butt led drive as he ran the ball eight-straight plays before tossing a touchdown pass to Baumgartner on a fourth down play from the 3.

Stratford threw an interception on its first play following the touchdown and gained just four yards the rest of the game to finish with 135. Edgar only had 151 total yards, but its defense proved too tough for the Tigers to overcome.

Running back Koehler Kilty, who ran for 209 yards in just three quarters in last week’s weather-shortened game against Mosinee, was held to 33 yards on 14 carries by the Edgar defense.

Stratford will open its Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division schedule at Manawa next Friday, Sept. 2, while Edgar will host Stevens Point Pacelli in a nonconference contest. Both games start at 7 p.m.
