LOYAL – The Auburndale Eagles ran their record to a perfect 3-0 as they have yet to be scored upon, rolling past Loyal 35-0 in a weather-shortened nonconference football game Friday night at Loyal High School.

The Eagles have scored 173 points in their three games thus far.

With the Loyal roster peppered with a good number of sophomores and freshmen, Auburndale’s senior quarterback/defensive back Trayton Weber was truly a man among boys.

Weber ran for two touchdowns, threw for another, returned an interception for another score, had a second interception and ran in an extra point for good measure. An impressive stat line for a game came all in one half.

In fact, after the Eagles five touchdowns in the first half, lightning was spotted, kicking in the automatic 30-minute delay. After that the lightning show continued, the teams never returned and the remainder of the game was canceled.

The Eagles actually punted on their first series but the Greyhounds coughed it up on a fumble on their third play from scrimmage. Four plays later Weber punched it from the 7 and the Eagles were off and running. Three plays later, Weber nabbed a pass out of the air with just one hand and retuned it about 17 yards.

He then handed it to Evan Scholl, who lugged it from the 9 for a 14-0 lead, after Weber’s 2-point PAT.

With 2:03 left in the first quarter, Weber found Timothy Schmitt for a 9-yard scoring strike and it was 21-0 after the first.

Loyal got its initial first down of the game on a pass interference penalty but that drive was also short-lived as Weber stepped in front of a pass on his own 40 and deposited it in the end zone 60 yards later to make it 28-0.

The Greyhounds fumbled on their next possession and after a six-play drive Weber called his own number and walked in from the 2 to end the scoring and in this case, the game.

The Eagles will entertain Hurley next Friday for another nonconference game. Both teams are state-ranked in Division 6. Loyal will travel to Colby for a nonconference game.
