Columbus girls beat Assumption, lose to Pittsville in pair of one-point games

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic girls basketball team opened the season with a split at the Cranberry Classic, held Friday and Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption High School.

The Dons found themselves in a pair of extremely low-scoring games, beating Assumption 22-21 on Friday and losing to Pittsville 20-19 on Saturday.

Columbus won the opener on Friday night, holding the Royals to just one point in the fourth quarter. Deanna Kaiser made a free throw with 42 seconds left to provide the winning margin for the Dons.

Taylor Weister had eight points and Elizabeth Manlick had seven for Columbus.

Hannah Marti made a basket with 2.9 seconds left in Saturday’s game to give Pittsville the one-point win over the Dons.

Manlick again scored seven points for Columbus.

Columbus hosts Prentice in a nonconference game on Tuesday.
