Assumption storms from behind to upset Columbus Catholic in Division 4 girls volleyball regional final

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic volleyball team had its season come to a stunning end as it dropped a marathon five-set match to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 3-2 in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Saturday night at Columbus Catholic High School.

The No. 1 seeded Dons won the first two sets 25-18, 25-20, before No. 5 Assumption came roaring back to win the next three 25-18, 25-19, 15-8.

Assumption moves on to a D-4 sectional semifinal at No. 2 seed Athens on Thursday. Columbus Catholic had reached sectionals in each of the past three seasons.

Courtney Sommer had 12 kills, nine digs and 17 assists, and Jenna Kibbel had 26 digs and six kills to lead Columbus.

Aaliyah Krenn added 12 kills and six blocks, Lily Stratman had 16 assists and eight digs, Gracie Wilczek had 14 digs and five kills, and Izzy Hoglund had a team-high 27 digs for the Dons.
