Columbus Catholic’s Isaac Scheer qualifies for state after placing third at Division 3 cross country sectional

STEVENS POINT – Marshfield Columbus Catholic sophomore Isaac Scheer qualified for his second-straight state meet after placing third at the WIAA Division 3 Cross Country Sectional on Saturday at Standing Rock Park.

Charlie Vater of Iola-Scandinavia won the boys race in 16:54.8, nine seconds ahead of Stevens Point Pacelli’s Adam Eiden. Scheer was third in 17:13.3 to earn an individual qualifying spot for the 2022 WIAA State Cross Country Championships, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams qualify for the state meet.

In addition to Vater and Scheer, Rosholt’s Jacob Ross (sixth, 17:25.8), Pittsville’s Derek Grossman (eighth, 17:44.3) and Iola-Scandinavia’s Jacob Lashua (18:01.1) locked up the boys qualifying spots.

Pacelli won the boys team title with 35 points, with Pardeeville second with 116 to move on to state. Auburndale finished eighth with 205 points, Columbus was ninth with 208 and Spencer had an incomplete squad.

Mason White Eagle led Auburndale, taking 15th in 18:22.0, five seconds behind Andrew Scheer of Columbus. Spencer’s top runner was Malachai Anderson, who was 78th in 21:47.3.

Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, behind winner Lucy Dolan (19:01.2), won the girls team title with 38 points. Laconia was second with 67. Auburndale, Columbus Catholic and Spencer all had incomplete teams and did not have anyone qualify for state.

Hope Schulte of Auburndale was the area’s top runner, taking 29th in 23:32.9.
