MARSHFIELD – A big run at the end of the second half by Appleton East turned the tables and propelled the Patriots to a 66-52 victory over Marshfield in a nonconference boys basketball game Tuesday night at Marshfield High School.

Marshfield led for most of the first half before East used a 12-0 run over the final 3½ minutes to take a seven-point lead into halftime and never trailed again.

The Tigers fall to 1-1 overall with the loss in their home opener. East was playing its season opener.

A basket by Owen Hanson gave Marshfield a 6-5 lead early and the Tigers led by as much as five on three occasions, the last on a 3-pointer by Brooks Hinson that put Marshfield up 21-16 with 5:22 to go in the first half.

After a dunk by Tyson Keil for Appleton East and a rebound and basket by Marshfield’s Luke LeMoine, the Tigers missed their final three shot attempts and turned the ball over twice as East made five-straight baskets to take control.

“We have to do a better job of disciplining ourselves on offense,” Marshfield coach Chris Fischer said. “We got a little one-on-one happy there, where guys took turns thinking they were going to be the answer, they were going to be the run-stopper instead of being patient and getting us back to where we were when we had the lead.

“We had good ball movement, good attacking, good drive and kick.”

Both teams started slowly in the second half. A Hinson 3-pointer brought the Tigers to within four at 33-29, but Marshfield only made one basket from the field during the next six minutes and Appleton East was able to pull away again.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Cade Prestigiacomo and three baskets from Caleb Glaser sparked a 15-2 run by the Patriots that essentially put the game away with just less than six minutes to go. Marshfield never got closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Glaser finished with 24 points, Prestigiacomo had 15 and Joseph LaChappel kicked in 14 for Appleton East, which shot 49 percent from the field (24 of 49).

Hanson had 11 points, and Hinson and Marcus Neve each added nine for the Tigers, who struggled shooting the ball after a solid start, finishing at just 32 percent (19 of 58).

“I had a feeling we were going to play well tonight, and we did the first 12-15 minutes,” Fischer said. “They went on that run and we clawed back, but then all of a sudden it was a 20-point game. We have to stop relying on the ball going through the basket to give ourselves energy. When things don’t go well, what are we going to do for our energy? Tonight, we didn’t know what to do.”

Marshfield will travel to La Crosse Central for a nonconference game Friday.
