Stratford boys basketball uses free throw shooting, defense to defeat Spencer

SPENCER – The Stratford boys basketball team shot just 29 percent from the field but made its mark at the free throw line and were able to pull out a 54-32 nonconference win over Spencer on Monday night at Spencer High School.

The Tigers were just 14 of 48 from the field but made up for it at the line, knocking down 21 of 27 free throws.

Stratford (3-0) was tough defensively as well, holding Spencer (1-1) to just 13 points in the first half to take a 16-point lead into halftime.

Ashton Wrensch continued his torrid scoring pace to start the season, pouring in 21 points for Stratford. Braeden Schueller and Brady Schmidt each chipped in 10 in the win.

Spencer statistics were not reported.

Stratford hosts Athens for a Marawood Conference crossover game on Thursday. Spencer is off until Tuesday, Dec. 13, when it is at home against Marshfield Columbus Catholic for a Cloverbelt Conference East Division matchup.
