STEVENS POINT – Stevens Point handed the Marshfield boys basketball team its first Wisconsin Valley Conference loss in the past two seasons, slipping past the Tigers 62-60 in double overtime Tuesday night at Stevens Point Area Senior High.

A three-point play by Arriel Council Jr. with 42 seconds left in regulation for Stevens Point, tying the game at 48-48. Marshfield wound down the clock and Brooks Hinson missed a 3-pointer, which was followed by tip-back attempts by Owen Hanson and Chris Pohl that bounced off as the buzzer sounded.

In the first overtime, SPASH led 53-49 with one minute left before Luke LeMoine scored on a fastbreak following a turnover with 54 seconds left. Marshfield blocked a shot attempt on the next possession, and Hinson canned a turn-around jumper in the lane with 18 seconds to go to tie it again.

Stevens Point ran down the clock, called a timeout, and missed a desperation 3-point attempt at the buzzer to send it to the second extra frame.

The Panthers were able to pull away with a 9-4 run before Hinson nailed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left to make it interesting. Stevens Point then turned the ball over on a long inbounds pass, but Marshfield had just 1 second left to make a play. After a timeout, LeMoine attempted a turn-around 3-pointer about five feet beyond the 3-point line and it bounced off the rim.

LeMoine and Hanson each had 16 points, and Hinson finished with 13 for Marshfield, which falls to 16-6 and 9-1 in the WVC. The loss snaps Marshfield’s 21-game Wisconsin Valley Conference winning streak.

Jerrin Suehs had 19 points and Council Jr. added 15 for Stevens Point (11-10, 7-3 WVC).

Marshfield will have to win just one of its final two games to earn the outright conference title, its second in a row. The Tigers play at Wausau West on Friday and finish their regular-season schedule Thursday, Feb. 23, at home against Merrill.

The brackets for the WIAA boys basketball playoffs will be announced on Sunday.
