EAU CLAIRE – For the fifth time in the last six years Marshfield will be heading to Madison for the state team tournament after grabbing a pair of convincing wins at the WIAA Division 1 Team Wrestling Sectional on Tuesday night at Eau Claire North High School.
Marshfield defeated West Salem/Bangor 54-15 in the semifinals and Holmen 46-23 in the championship match to earn its seventh trip to the state team tournament (2002, 2003, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022). Marshfield lost in the state semifinals last year to Holmen, 38-31. Holmen had reached state each of the past six seasons.
The WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament will be held March 3-4 at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse.
Marshfield dominated the semifinal against West Salem/Bangor, wining the first 11 matches.
Brett Franklin (138 pounds) and Hoyt Blaskowski (145) had pins to start out the match before Caleb Dennee (152) and Grayden Rode (160) followed with major decisions.
Garrett Willuweit (170), James Clements (220) and Adrian Kruger (285) added pins, Owen Griesbach (182) won by major decision, and Mason Seidl (195) and Jon Sternweis (106) both won by decision as Marshfield finished off the victory with four matches remaining. Ava Gardner won by forfeit at 113 before West Salem/Bangor won the final three matches to provide the final score.
In the championship match it was nearly identical. Blaskowski started the match with a 16-1 technical fall win at 145 and start a string of six-straight wins. Willuweit (170) and Griesbach (182) had pins, Dennee won by major decision at 152 and Seidl by technical fall at 182, and along with an 8-6 win by Rode at 160, Marshfield led 27-0.
After a pin by Holmen, Krueger won in overtime and Sternweis had a 16-0 technical fall to nearly wrap it up.
Easton Ledden won 12-0 at 120 and Franklin finished off the win with a pin in 49 seconds to make it official for Marshfield.
Eleven Tigers boys and one girl will head back to Eau Claire North for the Division 1 individual sectional Saturday. The top two finishers in each weight class earns a berth at the 2023 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 23-25.
