Marathon knocks off Auburndale in eight innings, finishes off outright Marawood South baseball title

AUBURNDALE – Marathon clinched the outright Marawood Conference South Division baseball title with a 2-1 win over Auburndale in eight innings on Thursday at Auburndale High School.

The win by the Raiders, their second-straight 2-1 victory over Auburndale this week, clinches the conference championship as they finish their Marawood South season at 9-1.

Daniel Laqua went 4-for-4, and Grant Warren and Cooper Hoeksema had RBI for Marathon (12-2 overall).

Sloan Welch drove in Blake Raab with the Eagles’ lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning to send it to extras, before the Raiders scored against Welch on the mound to grab the win. Auburndale finishes its conference season with a 6-4 record and moves to 8-6 overall.

Auburndale hosts Athens for a nonconference game Friday at 4:45 p.m.
