Stratford girls, Columbus Catholic boys cross country teams qualify for state at WIAA Athens sectional

ATHENS – The Stratford girls and Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys cross country teams will be running at the state meet next week after each finished second at the 2014 WIAA Division 3 Sectional on Friday at Erbach Park.

Stratford had top-five finishes from Johnelle Miner and Kaylee Hollatz to finish second in the girls team standings by just one point over Marathon, 96-97. Phillips won the team title with 48 points.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on those qualifying teams move on to the 2014 WIAA State Cross Country Championships at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Miner finished in 20:45.6 and Hollatz was right behind her, taking fifth in 20:57.3 to lead the Tigers to state.

Ellie Lochner of Phillips won the girls race in 20:11.6, four seconds ahead of Anna Buchberger of Marathon.

Nadia King of Spencer finished sixth in 21:00.4 and Auburndale freshman Kali Karl was 10th in 21:15.0 to earn individual qualifying spots for the state meet. Spencer was seventh and Auburndale finished eighth in the team standings.

Columbus Catholic did not have a complete team. Hannah Grubofski was the Dons’ top runner, taking 27th in 22:52.1.

Ben Behling finished fifth in 17:45.5 and Leonhard Steinert was 10th in 18:12.1 to lead the Columbus Catholic boys, which finished second with 87 points, 20 ahead of third-place Stratford. Marathon won the boys team title with 42 points thanks to its top three runners finishing second, third and fourth overall.

Cade Lehman of Stratford grabbed an individual qualifying spot at state, taking eighth in 17:56.5.

Auburndale was 11th and Spencer took 12th overall.

Cody Gehrke led Auburndale, finishing 26th in 18:41.5.

Donovan Fox topped Spencer, taking 13th in 18:17.3, missing out on the final individual qualifying spot by 19 seconds.

The Division 3 boys race will be at 11:30 a.m. and the Division 3 girls race will start at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 at the state meet.
