MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a pair of extra-inning victories over Wausau East on Thursday at Jack Hackman Field.
The Tigers won the opening game 1-0 in nine innings to beat East 4-1 in eight innings in the second game to finish the Wisconsin Valley Conference season on an eight-game winning streak.
Marshfield’s nonconference game at Mosinee on Friday was not completed and will not be made up. Marshfield led 7-1 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning before heavy rain halted play, leaving the Tigers one out short of another victory.
Marshfield finishes the regular season with a 17-7 record and an 8-4 mark and a second-place finish in the WVC.
Jared Klein walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Sam Klein with the game’s only run in the opener of the twinbill.
Jacob Brueggen threw the complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits.
Jack Donahue won Game 2 with an eight-inning effort and gave up only four hits.
Sam Klein had a two-RBI double and Braden Bohman followed with an RBI single in the top of the eighth of the second game to provide the difference.
The Tigers will host either Chippewa Falls or New Richmond in a WIAA Division 1 regional final on Thursday, June 4, at 5 p.m. at Hackman Field.
