Columbus Catholic/Spencer’s Ben Alt comes up one shot short of state boys golf meet

ASHLAND – Columbus Catholic/Spencer boys golfer Ben Alt lost a playoff for the final individual spot at next week’s state meet on Tuesday at the WIAA Division 2 boys golf sectional at Chequamegon Bay Golf Club.

Alt, a junior, shot an 80 to tie for fourth place overall and for the third and final individual state meet berth. He lost a playoff to Will Gauper of Somerset.

Bloomer won the team title with a score of 338, three shots better than Hayward. The two teams move on to the 2015 WIAA State Boys Golf Championships at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona on June 8-9.

Sparta’s Brett VonRuden had a 78 and Nick Anderson of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau had a 79 to secure the top two individual qualifying spots. The top three individuals not on the top two teams also earn a spot at the state meet.

Andrew Zillmer of Bloomer had a 78 to tie VonRuden for medalist honors.
