MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys hockey team defeated the WSLFG Blizzard and Regis/Altoona/McDonell to win the title at its home Andrew Thiel Memorial Invitational on Saturday at the Marshfield Area Ice Arena.

Marshfield routed WSFLG (Webster/Siren/Frederic/Luck/Grantsburg) 11-1 and came back to beat Regis/Altoona/McDonell 6-4 to finish the two-day tournament with a 3-0 record and improve to 6-5 this season.

In the win against WSFLG, Marshfield scored nine times in the first period as it cruised to the win.

Evan Weister had three goals and and Ryan Krueger scored twice in the first period for the Tigers.

Isaac Wellens, Ben Baur, Tyler Spaeth and Dominic Lange also had goals in the opening period for the Tigers. Spaeth and Ben Claessens added goals in the win.

Marshfield scored three times in the first period against Regis/Altoona/McDonell, before losing the lead as the Ramblers scored three times in the second period to take a 4-3 lead.

The Tigers rallied, with Krueger scoring twice and Wellens adding another in less than 4 minutes late in the game.

“We played the brand of hockey that we thought would lead to success against RAM,” Marshfield coach Eric Bowman. “The second period we took a lot of bad penalties, and they made us pay for losing our heads. We had a great response in the third period and came out with our home tournament championship. The coaches are proud of the heart the team has shown over the last four-game stretch.”

Marshfield hosts Wausau East/Merrill on Tuesday.
