Columbus Catholic softball sweeps doubleheader over Spencer, clinches at least a tie for Cloverbelt East title

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic softball team clinched no worse than a tie for the Cloverbelt Conference East Division title with a doubleheader sweep of Spencer on Monday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.

Columbus Catholic (13-3, 10-0 Cloverbelt East) scored five times in the first inning and finished Game 1 off with a six-run sixth, ending the game via the 10-run rule.

Sam Casperson had three hits and scored three times, and Shelby Spata had a pair of doubles and knocked in three in the win for the Dons.

Ema Schultz had two of Spencer’s three hits.

Spata continued her torrid hitting in the second game, smacking four singles and driving in eight in just three innings as the Dons finished off the sweep due to the 15-run rule after three.

Akosua Yeboah earned the pitching win in Game 1, striking out six, while Abby Wojcik struck out five in three innings to win the nightcap.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday as Columbus Catholic will host Bowler/Gresham for a nonconference game, and Spencer (4-13, 2-7 Cloverbelt East). will be at home for another conference doubleheader against Colby/Abbotsford.
