SPENCER – The Spencer/Columbus wrestling team had one state qualifier last year and hopes to have a few more in 2010.

The WIAA postseason doesn’t start until next Saturday, when the Rockets will take part in the Division 3 regional at Phillips, but the first step in individual competition starts this Saturday with the Cloverbelt Conference Tournament at Loyal. The first matches are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.

Spencer/Columbus coach Adam Vaughan said Rogers (140 pounds), as well as Danny Schubert at 135, Tye Ackman at 160 and Josh Werstovshek at 215 should be among the Rockets’ contenders for conference championships.

“Werstovshek is 25-5 and he’s been a nice surprise,” Vaughan said. “He has really stepped it up, where is was a little above .500 last year.”

The Rockets have been preparing for their postseason run during the past week or so, with high expectations for a number of individuals.

“This time of the season, it’s wrestle or go home, it’s the way it is,” Vaughan said. “I think they have the talent, it’s just a matter of do they show up that day. The team has been wrestling well lately. If they continue to do what they are doing, I like their chances.”
